Lyrics
And the train rumbled on past Cushman Corners
I counted the cars going by
I wanted it to last forever
That old country place in my heart
That old time place in my heart
Was a general store set back from the crossing
Old men jawing on the porch
A mother called “come home for supper”
Children gatherin’ up their mitts and balls
Children gatherin’ up their mitts and balls
But there’s no going back to find the old place
Nothing stays the same as it was
The years go by and it feels it was a moment
Only a moment in time
Only a moment in time
So pay your mind and count up the good things
Pay your mind to the ones you love
They’re here and gone and it seems like a moment
Only a moment in time
Only a moment in time
And there’s no going back to find the old place
Nothing stays the same as it was
The years go by and it feels like a moment
Only a moment in time
It was only a moment in time

Lyrics
Set me down at the crossroad darlin’
You know I got to make up my mind
I’m going down to the crossroad darlin’
Ain’t no one gonna head me off this time
I was standin’ by the river this evenin’
Catfish jumpin’ all over the banks
Everything movin’, carried along that river
Me I’m left just standing in this place
You were talkin’
You didn’t say much, never did say much
Mouth was movin’
Never did say that much to me
Empty garden, leaves all dried up
Nothin’ but the bare bones left behind
All of my tears couldn’t keep it watered
Now there’s not a single place to hide
In the nighttime
Loaded with silence, nothin’ but silence
Up all night
I’m just tryin’ to ease my mind
A river boat passes, paddlewheel turning
Sounds of laughter carry across the way
Wish I was on it goin’ some new place
Troubles all dumped in a sack and gone away
You were talkin’
You didn’t say much, never did say much
Mouth was movin’
Never did say that much to me
Set me down at the crossroad darlin’
You know I got to make up my mind
I’m going down to the crossroad darlin’
Ain’t no one gonna head me off this time
Ain’t no one gonna head me off

Lyrics
In my grandfather’s house there was music
How we danced in the middle of the room
And his hands danced a jig on the piano
When he played a happy tune
There were songs and games in the parlor
And little bare feet on the floor
And a carom board on the kitchen table
Stolen cookies from the pantry jar
My grandfather’s life was a hard one
In the time of bread lines and the dole
It was hard to provide for all the family
And in later years illness took its toll
My grandfather’s life was a hard one
His face was drawn and lined
But when his hands danced a jig on the piano
Oh you couldn’t miss the twinkle in his eye
Oh how I wish we could go there
And gaze in the window one time
And watch his hands dance a jig on the piano
And never miss the twinkle in his eye

Lyrics
Would you stay with me char
When all of my early days are done
When years have passed
And time’s gone faster than leaves turn brown
Would you stay, stay
Would you stay with me
I always thought
That life’s so short we’d be a memory by now
Times were hard
And we’ve come so far I wonder how
Would you stay, stay
Would you stay with me
You make it right
My heart is lighter when you’re here
All my cares
Just disappear in the air
Would you stay, stay
Would you stay with me

Lyrics
An old man was walking by the water
Leaving footprints soft and tired
I turned to walk along behind him
We went on for miles
His cares lay heavy on his shoulders
His restless eyes moved side to side
I called to ask him why he wandered
Why he left us when I was a child
Oh won’t you do this for me
Oh do this one thing for me
Tell me why
The sand stretched out on the horizon
All loved ones long left behind
Strangers came and went as we wandered
Still I followed, looking for a sign
I tried in vain to make him hear me
He just moved on, lost in pain
Along the way he made another family
I saw him later, wandering again
Oh won’t you do this for me
Oh do this one thing for me
Tell me why

Lyrics
Bet you got something in your pocket (pocket)
You probly never even use
Bet you got something in your pocket (pocket)
You know it wouldn’t hurt to lose
Why not rustle it out today
And give it away
All that stuff in your closet (closet)
You don’t even know is there
All those clothes in your closet (closet)
Somebody else could wear
You could spread ’em aroundAll over town
What are those things in your cupboard (cupboard)
That never see the light of day
Fine old things in your cupboard (cupboard)
Surely you could give ’em away
Why not lighten your load
Send ’em on down the road
I didn’t know it was raining (raining)
I felt so cozy and warm
Didn’t even know it was raining (raining)
‘Cause I never felt the storm
How does anyone rest in bed
And no roof over their head
I went looking for a rainbow (rainbow)
Found it out my back door
I was looking for a rainbow (rainbow)
Don’t have to look anymore
Had a been a snake it would’ve bit me hard
In my own backyard
There I was looking for rainbow (rainbow)
Found it in my backyard
I was looking for rainbow (rainbow)
Didn’t have to look too hard
I only had to open my eyes
To get wise

Lyrics
Come on, let’s be friends
I know a place where we can go fishing together, down the road
I know a place where the fish bite every day
Come on, let’s be friends
Life’s so short, come on
Those old fish, they won’t be settin’ there forever, no they won’t
Those old fish got to move on and anyway
Life’s so short, come on
I know a place where the stars shine every night
Crickets won’t shut up for love nor money, I’m goin’
Musta been a cricket in another life anyway
Can’t help wanderin’ out to racket at the moon
Honey where are you goin’?
Come on, let’s be friends
This old world keeps shrinking on down by the minute, don’ you know
Every time I look around the soup gets thicker so
Come on, let’s be friends
Life’s so short, come on
You can’t catch fish with a fish pole settin’ on the back porch, catching dust
Come along we’ll catch some long ones together ’cause
Life’s so short come on
I know a place where the sun shines every day
People will smile just as you’re walkin’ along
Gather your wishes, remember your dreams
Come along honey, I’ll warble you up a song
Honey where are you goin’?
Come on, let’s be friends
I know a place where we can go fishing together, down the road
I know a place where the fish bite every day
Come on, let’s be friends
Life’s so short, come on
Life’s so short, come on
Life’s so short, come on

Lyrics
Bird flyin’ south on the wing
Leavin’ it all behind
Leavin’ it all behind
Runnin’ short on time
Longest train I ever saw
Come rollin’ around the bend
Rollin’ around the bend
Never come this way again
And the wheels they roll out of sight
Disappearing down the line
They’re rollin’ on
They’ve all gone on down the line
Ridin’ on the wind
Ridin’ on the wind
No mind what tomorrow’ll bring
I’m watchin’ that train roll by
Listenin’ to that sound
Listenin’ to that sound
Jump on that train, I’m gone
And the wheels they roll out of sight
Disappearin’ down the line
They’re rollin’ on
Bird flyin’ south on the wing
Leavin’ it all behind
Leavin’ it all behind
Runnin’ short on time

Lyrics
What am I doing in this place
I was sure I’d never be this lonesome
Not me, you know there’s some mistake
When I wake up I’ll never be this lonesome
How love binds you and keeps you by the door
How love finds you staring at the floor
When I wake up I won’t be here no more
Never no more
What was I thinking when I came
It looked so good but love’s so often blind
Time went by somehow I stayed
I just couldn’t lose the picture in my mind
I woke up in a dream, you were gone
People milling around and a hollow sound
Search though I would to find you, you were gone
You were gone
It’s devilish hard to let go of a dream
When hope won’t leave you free to say goodbye
And your eyes won’t read what’s written on the wind
And your feet won’t carry you anywhere at all
How love binds you and keeps you by the door
How love finds you staring at the floor
When I wake up I won’t be here no more
Never no more

Lyrics
Sittin’ by the highway watchin’ the sun set
Shieldin’ my eyes quiet as a leaf fallin’
Birds flyin’ by so graceful
But I’m troubled in mind
Can’t help but wonder will ya miss me
When you’re out there on the road
Head is lyin’ on a pillow
Alone alone
All these long years I have wandered
And times I felt alone
Now your company it thrills me
And I can’t get enough of your warmth
Sittin’ in the evenin’ after a hard day
Oh the comfort I feel by your side
Tellin’ stories and holding
On, holding on
So I wonder will ya miss me
When you’re out there on the road
Head is lyin’ on a pillow
Alone alone

Lyrics
Don’t you let that bluebird fly away
He’s got my heart
Don’t you let that bluebird fly away
He’s got my heart
Under his wing, tucked under his wing
Didn’t I try, try to make him stay
‘Cause he’s got my heart
Didn’t I try, try to make him stay
‘Cause he’s got my heart
Under his wing, tucked under his wing
Flyin’ away
Flyin’ away
How’m I gonna find my happiness
Without my heart
How’m I gonna find my happiness
When he’s got my heart
Under his wing, tucked under his wing
Don’t you let that bluebird fly away
He’s got my heart
Don’t you let that bluebird fly away
He’s got my heart
Under his wing, tucked under his wing
Flyin’ away
Flyin’ away
Flyin’ away
Flyin’ away

About the Artist
![](img/uploads/portrait.png)
Gail Fratar has been a musician all her life, having come from a family of musicians. She developed a love for old-time music at home and then university, along with a bunch of other rabid players and singers who couldn’t get enough of the music of the Carter Family, Stanley Brothers, Dock Boggs, Uncle Dave Macon, Clarence Ashley, everybody on “The Country Blues” album and so on.
Of late, she has been writing her own songs which tell stories, and has been very much enjoying playing them with a bunch of stellar musician friends, some of whom appear on the Bluebird cd.
